Automatic writing

For one of my modules I have been looking at Automatic writing. Automatic writing is the process, or product, of writing material that does not come from the conscious thoughts of the writer. The writer’s hand forms the message, and the person is unaware of what will be written. The phenomenon was investigated by psychologists during the 1800’s and 1900’s according to their theory automatic writing material is in the subconscious. This may explain that automatic writing often contains jumbled writing and errors.

Breton a follower of Dada a surrealist’s movement in the 1900’s worked to incorporate the unconscious into writing and art to release creativity and imagination of the unconscious. When practicing automatic writing, the writer must not try to write, they must detach them self to allow the unconscious to make random associations. A suspension of disbelief is critical for creativity.

I am not totally convinced if Automatic writing is actually real but there have been extensive research into it. I have been reading  Swan on a Black Sea by Geraldine Cummins. In this book are writings through Geraldine Cummins from another Automatic Writing Medium who is in the World of Spirit having gone to the higher realms, “died”, in 1956, she used the nom deplume of Mrs Willett. Her writings were tested by “The Society for Psychical Research” in the period of 1957-1961.

A very interesting read and not something that i would normally choose to read about but it interested me due to the fact that no one actually knows if it is real or not. The Automatic witing Wiki has lots of information about the subject and its history. Although a long read Breton’s Soluble Fish is a very interesting read and stretches the mind. Here is a site that has some information on surrealism and snippets of the Soluble Fish.
